Nick Taylor Charity Classic 2023

Nick Taylor Charity Classic 2023

As originally reported from The Abbotsford News and The Chilliwack Progress

“The Nick Taylor Charity Classic teed off under sunny skies September 14th at Cultus Lake Golf Course.

From a pre-round meet-and-greet with Canadian Open champion Nick Taylor, as well as time on the Top Tracer Range Simulator Experience, lunch, 18-hole tournament, dinner and after party – including the amazing putting contest at Tap-Ins – the Classic was a golf enthusiast’s dream. And while tourney participants are getting an amazing day of golf and memories, it’s the local charities that are the real beneficiaries of the event.

This year’s focus for funds raised was kids and amateur sports, namely Jumpstart, which helps kids who don’t have the financial means to participate in sports. Junior golf programs throughout the Fraser Valley will also see funding as will endowment scholarships at UFV.”

Blackbirch Contracting - Attention To Details

Blackbirch Contracting - Attention To Details

When it comes to renovating your kitchen, bathroom or whatever room in your home; you should hire a contractor that takes great attention to detail.

We had a visit with Marcus from Blackbirch Contracting recently, checking out a recent bathroom renovation that they had just completed. Stepping into this upstairs bathroom we noticed right away the attention to detail that Marcus and his team put into it. From putting a bluetooth speaker in with the ceiling fan, to the high quality lighting, tiles and the shelves.

We could tell that the shelves were something special and more than a simple set of shelves. As we photographed the bathroom and looked in awe at the bathtub and warm, relaxing setting this room was in, we kept coming back to the three wooden shelves on the wall.

The wooden shelves set on the wall had a deep, important meaning for the client and Marcus and his team were able to take the wood from the client to use in this amazing room. The shelves provided a warm, rustic looking to this setting and a constant reminder of what was important. The added plant life and pleasant glow of the lights made this bathroom the perfect place to relax and enjoy a long hot soak in the the tub.

44th Harrison Festival of the Arts - Soul, Funk, and R&B

44th Harrison Festival of the Arts - Soul, Funk, and R&B

Soul, Funk, and R and B Foregrounded at This Year’s Festival of the Arts

The 44th Harrison Festival of the Arts, running from July 7-16 in Harrison Hot Springs, will feature a lot of music that draws on the well of African American soul, funk, and R and B to create new sounds and expressions.

While the festival this year presents a huge diversity of music from guitar-based folk to traditionally influenced sounds from Italy, Mongolia, and Newfoundland, the soulful styles of 1960s and 70s African American popular culture run through the program as a sub-theme. This element of the program will be framed by the opening film on July 7, Summer of Soul, which is a documentary on the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival that featured black artists from Sly and the Family Stone to Stevie Wonder.

Capturing some of the vibe of Sly is Curtis Clearsky and the Constellationz, who perform their own brand of “indigifunk” that also draws on hip hop and rock. They will be on the outdoor Beach Stage on July 8 at 5pm. Another Beach Stage act who is influenced by urban funk and hip hop is Ruby Singh and the Future Ancestors (July 16 at 5pm), featuring some of Vancouver’s most stellar musicians including guitarist Gord Grdina and vocalist Khari Wendell Mclelland alongside rapper and composer Ruby Singh. Also coming to the beach stage is Maple Blues award winning vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Angelique Francis, whose music is clearly influenced by the greatest African American vocalists from Bessie Smith to Aretha Franklin (July 13 and 14).

In the Memorial Hall, much beloved blues and soul singer Celeigh Cardinal will hit the stage on Wednesday July 12 at 8:30pm with her band. A hit at festivals across Canada, Cardinal has won a lot of fans regionally through her past performances at the Mission Folk Festival. With festival closing act The Soul Motivators (Sunday July 16, 7:30) fronted by powerhouse singer Shahi Teruko, it is clear there is no shortage of outstanding, soulful female vocalists at this year’s festival. The final show promises to be a super funky dance party!

Tickets for the festival, along with full lineup and schedule, are now on sale at www.harrisonfestival.com

The biggest event of the year in logger sports!

The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS National Championships are coming to Chilliwack, BC on August 12 & 13, 2023 and you won’t want to miss out on the action. This adrenaline-fueled event showcases the top male and female logger sport athletes from across the country as they compete in a series of disciplines, including the hot saw, single buck, standing block chop, stock saw, underhand chop, and springboard chop.

On Saturday August 12 at 6:00pm the country’s 12 best Pro division athletes compete in the individual competition for the prestigious title of Canadian champion. The athletes compete in all TIMBERSPORTS® disciplines in three rounds, with points awarded based on the quickest times in each discipline. At the end of each round, the athletes with the lowest point totals are eliminated. The six athletes with the highest point totals compete for the title of world champion in the final round, which involves the deafening yet impressive Hot Saw discipline. The athlete with the highest points total after all six disciplines is crowned STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Canadian Champion and will head to Germany for the World Championships.

Reigning Canadian Champion and Bronze Medal winner at the 2022 World Championships, Marcel Dupuis defends his title against the 11 best logger sports athletes in all of Canada.

On Sunday, the Pros return to rip it up with their hot saws in the loudest and most intense competition in sports. Followed by the toughest women in the country battling it out to see who will take home the national title.

On Sunday August 13 at 2:00 pm the Pro’s return to open up the day with the Hot Saw Challenge, possibly the loudest and most intense competition combining “man” and machine.

The athletes must wield their hot saws with speed and precision to eliminate their opponent. No easy task given the average hot saw weighing in at around 27kg, Hot Saws are custom-built saws usually made with the engine of a dirt bike, snowmobile or jet ski, and delivering upwards of 60 horsepower! Carrying one of these beasts is enough of a challenge, let alone controlling the power enough to cut three cookies (or discs) from the log within a 15cm margin in mere seconds.

Also on Sunday the toughest women in the country take to the stage to show you that axes and chain saws aren’t just for the boys. The top 8 female athletes will convene to battle it out in 4 disciplines; the standing block chop, underhand chop, single buck and stock saw.

The woman with the highest point score will win the 2023 Championship an immediately qualify to represent Canada at the International Women’s Cup in Europe.
