Previously we went around Chilliwack looking for the best Eggs Benedict but now we are working alongside Kristina Legault to find the best appetizers in town.

It’s 2023 and we are back at it; this round, we are checking out the best local spots for appetizers! We stopped in at Hugo’s Mexican Kitchen at 7101 Vedder Rd where you will find home cooking, tons of flavour and a welcoming atmosphere.  You can’t have Mexican food without the chips, salsa and guac! We tested all the heat levels of salsa; mild, medium and hot and the hot was even achievable for these light weights. A healthy portion of guacamole and satisfying crispy salty chips made this appetizer a delicious munchy.  Next up, sampler tacos; we had 3 vegetarian and 3 meat options which could easily make a meal with the generous portions plus tortilla soup which was hearty and tasty.

My personal favorite is always a chicken enchilada; do you choose red or green sauce? I love the green for the extra kick, this was one of the best enchiladas I’ve ever had and will definitely be going back. Even baby Stevie enjoyed some samplers!  Of course, spice level appropriate.

New in town is a fresh, high quality ingredient Poké bar named Steve’s Poké Bar.

Located on Young Road between Chilliwack Central and Hocking Avenue, this brand new spot is the perfect stop to grab some lunch with a friend or pick up your dinner and go.

We had the privilege of stopping in for lunch with Culture Co. and it was so difficult to pick what our first meal at Steve’s would be.

Spicy Mayo Salmon

We ended up going with the Mayo Spice Me Up which included:
Spicy Mayo Salmon, hawaiian seasoning (furikake), tobiko, corn, edamame, imitation crab, wakame seaweed salad, pickled ginger, sesame seeds and Steve’s Spicy Mayo drizzled on top

What’s Poké?
Poké, pronounced “POH-KAY”, means “to chop” in Hawaiian. It is chopped cubes of raw fish marinated in Hawaiian salt, spices, and sauces. But hey that’s a mouthful! So when your friends ask, you can tell them that Poke is cubed raw fish marinated with Hawaiian sauces & spices. Check out their menu to see what bowl you’d like to try!

As we make our way Around Chilliwack, we popped in to Corner Nook Café on Young Rd. Fun fact, I was the listing agent when it sold in 2019 to the current owner who has maintained the charm and welcoming feel of the restaurant! We arrived slightly before 9am which was perfect as people starting coming in and filling up the restaurant about 10 min after we arrived. We both had eggs benny (of course!) and was a generous sized portion and my favorite, loads of hollandaise to enjoy with the breakfast potatoes. Friendly quick service, great value, fresh hot coffee, welcoming restaurant and fun décor. This corner nook is not to be missed!

We recently had the chance to join Kristina Legault and her colleague Carly on a lunch and Frankie’s did not disappoint. From the warm welcome at the entrance way, to the great service and attention from their server, everything was spot on.

”Arancini, aka risotto balls are delicious! I have tried to make these at home but are never the same. I specifically head to Frankie’s when craving these delicious and savory crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside appies. Italian style pepperoni pizza completes the meal so nicely! We recently visited Bow & Stern at District 1881 to try their weekend brunch menu out and they did not disappoint. Aside from trying the Eggs Benny, we also tried the Chicken and Waffles dish. Check out the photos below.

Chef Craig Scherer’s dish was amazing; perfect elements of oozing eggs, buttery hollandaise, crisp and fluffy potatoes plus the salad was a refreshing touch to one of my favorite meals. With the nice weather finally arriving, it’s always nice to be able to grab a quick meal to take out for a picnic at the lake, park or along the riverside.

The Town Butcher has an amazing deli selection and we’ve been able to check out firsthand over a few different shoots all the work they put into it. From their twice baked potatoes, to their Maui ribs, to their various salads - broccoli, Greek, potato, pasta and more. There are some amazing options for you to pick up and go.

That might sound like that’s all we have to say about it, but it’s not. We’ve spent a couple hours over a few different days watching how the staff at the Town Butcher puts together their grab and go deli items. In a word it’s meticulous. They use the freshest products, the best spices with no-additives, they use the best meat and cheeses and they don’t use anything that’s pre-packaged or out of a tub like you’d find at various grocery stores.

Cold brew and wings on a Wednesday is a great way to get through the middle of the week.

When it comes to wings though there are a lot of options: flat or drum? wet or dry? salty, sweet or spicy? oven baked or deep fried? sauce or no sauce? So many options!

For us, the best in wings in town are at Major League 2 Taphouse and Sports Pub and you’ll find their wings on special every Wednesday! You can choose from Honey Garlic, Teriyaki, Sweet Thai, Honey Mustard, Cajun, Dry Garlic, Salt & Pepper, Dill Pickle, Hot, Greek, BBQ and be sure to try Triple Crown - it’s Hot, BBQ and Teriyaki blended together!

Side note, thanks to the staff at ML2 we were privy to trying one of their favourite off menu wing flavours: Hot & Dill Pickle. It might sound a bit off putting to something like that together but it’s intense and worth trying at least once!

A few of our favourite wing pleasures would have to be salt & pepper wings with hot sauce on the side, you get a bit of everything then; OR, the classic hot wings and blue cheese (for those crazy people that don’t like blue cheese, you can get the ever so popular ranch). Pair that up with one of the many craft beers that’s on tap at ML2 and you’ll be eating pretty!

Open seven days a week from 12pm-6pm, Kent’s Ice Cream Co. is a great spot to hit up for some amazing ice cream and waffle cones. The smell of fresh baked waffle cones hits you right when you walk through the front doors and the selection of ice cream will leave you wanting to come back and try the next great flavour.

Located at 47582 Yale Road (hop on Yale Road and head east, you’ll see Kent’s next to Little Mountain Greenhouses at the foot of Little Mountain) and has ample parking and space on their front patio and picnic tables in their front lawn.

The service has always been amazing when we’ve stopped in and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed getting our Bubble Gum and Moose Track flavoured ice cream in a waffle cone but our last visit we discovered a small pint of ice cream in the freezer that we took home with us. The Mint Brownie ice cream is to die for. Absolute heaven. Highly recommend it!

Our Recommendation:
Kent’s Ice Cream Co. now offers Take Home Pints of ice cream. They are currently only offering a few flavours and in limited, small batches which keeps the ice cream fresh and tasty!

Available for $10 each and with limited quantities available. We highly recommend trying their Mint Brownie pints. Delicious!!!

So pick up the kids after school and head over Kent’s Ice Cream Co. or you can simple head there yourself to enjoy a nice little treat for yourself. You’ll be happy you did.

Finding the perfect spot to have brunch on the weekend in Chilliwack can sometimes be a little tricky. Finding the perfect spot PLUS discovering fresh, wholesome, amazing ingredients with fantastic drinks makes your weekend complete.

We’ve loved Hugo’s for a long time. A very long time.

Since they started offering a brunch menu just over a year ago, we’ve been meaning to check it out because well, Hugo’s… and brunch… How could we resist not hanging out on the patio and enjoying some Mexican dishes and drinks while basking in the sunshine?!

The brunch menu is small but well chosen by the kitchen to provide you with the best Mexican breakfast dishes for you to enjoy. We highly recommend the Huevos Rancheros and pair it with a spicy Caesar! The Guava Mojito also goes down very smoothly and will leave you wanting at least one more.

The patio space at Hugo’s is somewhat limited so maybe call ahead about finding the best time for brunch or get there for 11am when they open on Saturday and Sunday, the two days they offer brunch.

One of the newest craft breweries in Chilliwack (yes we have multiple now!) is Bricklayer Brewing, located right at Five Corners. It’s located in one of the old buildings downtown that’s been restored and if you look at the ceiling inside you’ll see a piece of Chilliwack history - the shiplap ceiling is made up of wood that’s been saved and restored from other buildings in the downtown.

Craft beer and specialty pizza out on the farm? Yes please!

We recently visited Farmhouse Brewing, located on South Sumas Road (just off the intersection with Lickman Road) you can see the map below.

Being on ALR land, this brewery is extra special because not only do they grow some of the products they use in their beer and food, but they also use other agricultural products from other farms in BC as well. It’s a unique and amazing set-up.

We ordered their Speck & Ricotta pizza that has Tomato Sauce, Speck, Arugula, Whipped Ricotta, Herb Oil, Grana Padano and for the kids we ordered the Pepperoni pizza. The pizza is extra special as it’s cooked in their wood fired oven. The pizza crust was light and toppings were so well paired together. Completely delicious! Add in some craft beer or cider and you have such a winning combination.

Despite our current times, Farmhouse has done a great job of making lots of space both inside and outside on their covered patio, they even have an outdoor fire table to keep you warm. When the warmer weather comes again you can sit out on the lawn on their picnic tables and around the fire pit. It’s such a great a spot to meet up with your small group of people and enjoy locally grown products in a quiet, rural setting. We’re sure you’ll absolutely enjoy it!

Chilliwack Kabob is a pleasant surprise of a Syrian restaurant, tucked away off the side of Yale Road near the train overpass (map below).

As with many of our local restaurants, Chilliwack Kabob is doing a fantastic job of following the rules for dining during this Covid pandemic, offering both dine-in and dine-out options for you to enjoy their middle eastern cuisine. From coffee to falafels, from shawarma to of course kababs, you’ll thoroughly enjoy the aromatic flavours and large quantity meals.

On our recent visit, we had the “Kabab Fill Up” which could easily be shared with two people. Our favourites were the humus and kababs, which were absolutely delicious!

Despite some folks thinking he was a little crazy to risk opening a restaurant, Wael persisted with passion and drive until he was able to make it happen.”
