1. The Chilliwack Corn Maze at Greendale Acres: Where Tradition Meets Adventure

Celebrating its 25th season, the Chilliwack Corn Maze at Greendale Acres stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of agritourism. This beloved attraction isn't just a corn maze; it's a cornerstone of the community where traditions are woven, memories are created, and laughter echoes through the fields.

Greendale Acres boasts an ever-growing array of activities and play structures, ensuring that visitors of all ages can revel in the charm of the countryside. From youngsters digging through the corn kernel pit, to adults rediscovering their inner child on the giant jumping pillow, there's something for everyone. The maze itself presents an exhilarating challenge, inviting you to venture through its twists and turns, working together with friends and family to conquer the puzzle.

Mark your calendars for special events like Grandparents Day on October 6th and October 21st, where all grandparents are welcomed to the maze for free. And for those seeking a mid-week escape, Thursdays in August and September bring a special treat: $12 admission at the door from 2-6pm, making it a perfect time to explore the maze and surrounding attractions.

2. Klaassen Farms: The Land of the Blueberry

Agritourism isn't just about fun and games; it's also a chance to relish the bounty of the land. Klaassen Farms, a blueberry-lovers destination that embraces the essence of Chilliwack's fertile grounds, and welcomes visitors to experience the joy of fruit picking. U-pick season has now wrapped up, but the sweetness has not. The farm store offers seasonal and frozen fruit, ice-cream treats, blueberry lemonade, and more.

After picking up a sweet treat from the store, grab your complimentary wristband and head out back to the Adventure Zone. Here you will find an extensive playground to explore, complete with a big blue jumping pillow, a tractor tire pyramid, playhouse, slide, swings, tunnels, and more! Playing under the open sky, enjoying the tastes, smells, and sounds of the farm provides a connection to nature that's hard to find in urban settings.

Klaassen Farms is a reminder that agriculture isn't just a business; it's a way of life that nurtures both the land and the soul. Open regular hours (Monday through Saturday 9am-8pm) until September 2nd, and select hours until October 7th.

3. Fantasy Farms: A Haven For Fall Fun

For those seeking a fun and frightening agritourism experience, Fantasy Farms is a dream come true. This enchanting destination merges fall fun on the farm with some serious Halloween thrills.

Opening dates have yet to be announced for the 2023 pumpkin season, but every October Fantasy Farms opens Petey’s Pumpkin Patch for hay rides, u-pick pumpkins, animal visits, a family-friendly maze, as well as indoor and outdoor play areas.

If you are looking for something more frightening, cross your fingers as we wait for an opening announcement for the famous Reaper’s Maze of Terror. Visitors come from all over the Lower Mainland to experience the terror of this twisted theatrical horror experience. This attraction is NOT for children, and can make grown adults cry - you’ve been warned.

Fantasy Farms is a testament to the diversity of agritourism offerings in Chilliwack. With its mix of play areas, animal encounters, agricultural offerings, and terrifying attractions, Fantasy Farms turns a farm visit into an unforgettable journey.

Exploring the museum, visitors can witness vintage farming machinery, traditional tools, and even learn about historic farming techniques. It's an immersion into the roots of modern agriculture, where innovation met hard work to transform the landscape. The museum reminds us that today's farming traditions are built upon the ingenuity and dedication of those who came before us.

Children’s Day at the Harrison Festival of the Arts 2023

Will’s Jams to Headline Upcoming Children’s Day at the Harrison Festival of the Arts

In the midst of the 10 day Harrison Festival of the Arts, the Harrison Festival Society is delighted to announce its “festival within a festival”, Children’s Day. This fun and artistically inspired event will take place from 11am until 4pm on Wednesday July 12, in and around the Memorial Hall in Harrison Hot Springs.

As always, the day will include a range of hands-on activities and presentations, including indoor and outdoor concerts, crafts, a climbing wall, theatre games, and a tiny tots area.

The indoor feature performer in Harrison’s Memorial Hall will be Will’s Jams. This popular Vancouver- based children’s act is a rock and roll dance party, full of great, catchy songs that the whole family will enjoy. Will and his band were at the very limited outdoor version of Children’s Day in 2020, in the midst of the pandemic. With the understandably tiny attendance at that event, festival AD Andy Hillhouse thought it would be great to bring him back now that we are back to a more “normal” festival.

Outside the Memorial there will be performances by Middle Eastern group Al Qahwa, who will educate while they entertain, teaching kids about the songs and music of that part of the world. There will also be shows by Vancouver Puppet Theatre, a masterful presentation of old school European puppetry.

Children’s Day Coordinator Lyndsay James has compiled a range of hands-on, crafty activities for kids to get creative with. The Chilliwack School of the Performing Arts will also be present, with fun playful activities for the theatrically inclined. Hot dogs and other goodies will be for sale by the Agassiz- Harrison Lions.

There is much to experience in the 10 days of the festival, so check www.harrisonfestival.com for more details. Tickets can be purchased online or at the gate and are very accessible at six dollars.

Budget-Friendly Activities to Do with Your Kids This Summer

Summer is here, and it's the perfect time to create lasting memories with your kids… however many families are feeling the pinch with the cost of living at an all-time high. Thankfully, engaging in fun, memorable activities doesn't have to break the bank. We have compiled a list of 8 budget-friendly ideas to keep your kids entertained, active, and off the screens (at least for a little while) this summer.

Let's jump right in!

1. Lake Day:

For a classic summer experience, plan a day at the beach. Chilliwack Lake and Cultus Lake both provide family-friendly beaches and free parking in provincial lots. Pack your swimsuits, towels, and a picnic lunch. Spend quality time with your kids digging in the sand, jumping off the dock, swimming, and enjoying the natural beauty of these picturesque places. Don't forget to pack the sunscreen!

2. Bridal Falls Waterpark:

Beat the summer heat by visiting Bridal Falls Waterpark. This family-friendly destination offers several budget-friendly options. Take advantage of the free parking and enjoy accessible slides that eliminate the hassle of stairs. Bring your own picnic lunch to save on dining expenses. Additionally, consider purchasing the "dry pass" for discounted admission and take advantage of the $9 tickets for the last 1.5 hours of sliding—a perfect pre-bedtime activity for the little ones.

3. Tap-Ins Putting Course:

Located at Cultus Lake, Tap-Ins Putting Course offers an affordable way to introduce your kids to golf while having fun as a family. With a family pass priced at just $49, you can enjoy 1-2 hours of putting excitement with up to four people (two adults and two kids). Keep an eye out for their special events, such as the upcoming family night on Wednesday, July 12th, for even more family fun.

4. River Lounging:

Escape to the scenic banks of the Vedder and Fraser Rivers for a relaxing day of river lounging. These rivers offer some of the best sandy beaches in the area. Pack your buckets and shovels, beach chairs, and a picnic lunch to create a perfect riverside experience. Explore the numerous swimming holes along the Vedder River, or simply unwind and enjoy the tranquility of agate-hunting along the Fraser River.

5. Go Park-Hopping:

Discover the power of playgrounds in keeping your children entertained by planning a park-hopping adventure. Engage your kids by allowing them to choose three or four parks to visit. Pack snacks and water bottles, and embark on a park-hopping journey. You might even stumble upon a hidden gem you didn't know existed. Let the joy of exploration and playtime fill your summer days.

6. Hike!

Unplug your family from screens and embark on a hiking adventure in the stunning natural landscapes of Chilliwack. Hiking is a fantastic way to keep your kids active while appreciating the beauty of nature. Sit down together and create a bucket list of family-friendly hikes to conquer. Involve your children in the preparation process, from selecting trails to packing hiking bags. If you need suggestions on shorter hikes to begin with, check out this list.

7. Spray Parks

Sure there may be no waterslides at them, but the splash pads offer a fun free way to keep cool this summer. There are 3 spray parks in Chilliwack - the largest of which is outside the Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre, and boasts 16 above ground features, 24 ground sprays, and a “Big Top Soaker” with 170L of dumping power. The other two parks are: Cheam Centre Spray Park located at 45501 Market Way in Garrison, and Central Community Park located at 45943 Victoria Avenue.

8. The Chilliwack Pump Track

Located between the Chilliwack Curling Club and Landing Leisure Centre, the Chilliwack Pump Track is the longest pump track of it’s kind in North America! It is a great place to try a new skill while getting some exercise. The newly added mini pump track is great for little ones on scooters and balance bikes, making this a great activity for the entire family.

So there you have it folks. This summer, you don't have to spend a fortune to create magical moments with your children. Chilliwack offers a range of budget-friendly activities that will keep your kids entertained, active, and inspired. Whether it's waterpark adventures, mini-golf fun, beach days, riverside relaxation, park-hopping excursions, or family hikes, these activities will bring joy to both kids and adults alike and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Favourite Rainy Day Hikes in Chilliwack

Itching to get outside, but the weather won’t cooperate?

Springtime can feel long, dark, and wet here in Chilliwack.

Thankfully, we have compiled a short list of trails that you can complete on even the rainiest day - thanks to dense tree canopies (and a little rain gear). Read on for a list of our favourite rainy day hikes in Chilliwack.

Seven Sisters

A great little hike up in Cultus Lake Provincial Park, Seven Sisters is a 60 minute out and back hike that takes you to where 7 giant douglas fir trees once stood (3 remain standing today). We suggest parking in the Entrance Bay/Jade Bay Parking Lot and crossing the road to the Delta Grove Campground where the trail begins. This is a great hike for kids, and is rated as “Easy”.

Giant Douglas Fir

Located just south of Clear Creek Campground in Cultus Lake Provincial Park, The Giant Douglas Fir Trail is a great route for kids or those who want a short, easy walk in the woods. It is an out-and-back hike, taking around 30 minutes to complete. The route takes you to a single massive douglas fir tree which makes for a great photo op!

Teapot Hill

Our third, and definitely most popular Cultus hike is Teapot Hill. This trail begins in the parking lot along Columbia Valley Highway, just beyond Delta Grove Campground. It is a slightly more challenging trail than the two mentioned above, taking approximately 1 hour and 45 mins to complete the 5km route, with a 250m elevation gain. The top of the trail boasts a beautiful view of Cultus Lake, while the search for hidden teapots entertains kids and adults alike.

Broken Tree Loop Via Pitxel & Cholqthet (Community Forest)

The Broken Tree Loop is a great walking trail, nestled under the canopy of the Chilliwack Community Forest. It features a 156m elevation gain over 3.1km, taking approximately 1 hour and 5 mins to complete. The Chilliwack Community Forest is a unique trail system that has many different loops/hikes, so you can customize your experience and make your hike longer or shorter.

Hillkeep Regional Park

Although not as densely covered, Hillkeep Regional Park is a great short hike on the North side of Chilliwack for those rainy days that you want a quick burst of nature. It features two options: a viewpoint trail and a meadow trail, which in total equate to a 2km hike rated as “Easy” on most trail apps.

Mt. Thom

Mt. Thom Trail joins the suburban community of Promontory, with the rural community above in Ryder Lake. If you are looking for a good burn, park on Sylvan Drive and make your way up the wooden staircase which leads to a series of switchbacks up the mountain. This route is a round trip of about 10km, taking 2.5 hours to complete, and offers a beautiful view of the valley from the viewpoint up top. If you want to reap the rewards without breaking too much of a sweat there is a shorter route to the viewpoint. The trailhead on Churchill Parkway in Ryder Lake provides access to the lookout loop, a 1.8km trail that takes around 40 mins to complete.

Bridlewood Trail

The Suitcase Project - Chilliwack Museum Exhibit

The Suitcase Project - Chilliwack Museum Exhibit
Open February 9, 2023, to June 3, 2023

The Chilliwack Museum has a new exhibit open that we recommend you go check out. Learning about the stories of immigrants making their way to Canada and the USA and the journey of hardship and success that they have faced. As well as looking at artifacts and stories of ancestors and the troubles they faced.

The Suitcase Project asks yonsei and gosei (fourth and fifth generation) Japanese Canadians and Americans what they would pack if uprooted from their homes at a moment’s notice.

While these descendants of the internment and incarceration may never have to endure the same forced uprooting as their ancestors, Kayla Isomura’s work examines how they, and those descended from families who experienced other forms of discrimination, remain affected by this history today through a series of photographs, short films, and interviews.

Things to do this Family Day Weekend

Family Day is this Monday, February 20th. Do you have anything planned with your loved ones?

We love that this February holiday falls on a Monday, because it means you have the whole weekend leading up to it to celebrate! If you are drawing a blank on how to spend your Family Day - we have you covered.

We have compiled a list of great ideas and activities to give you inspiration:

Chillibowl Lanes

Chilliwack’s only bowling alley; This place is a blast from the past - quite literally! The shoes and equipment may be old, but some may say that it only adds to the nostalgia of Chillibowl Lanes. Founded in 1981 by two local families, this bowling alley offers fun for the entire family - young and old. For $40, you can rent a 6-person lane for an hour (includes shoe rentals). They don’t have a website, so we recommend calling ahead for operating hours and info.

Exit Escape Rooms

Have you tried an escape room before? Although suitable for almost all ages, this one is great if you have tweens, teens, or adult children who you are looking to do an activity with. They offer 5 different themed rooms, and have a special family discount this Family Day for groups of 4 or more! Head to their Facebook Page for details.

Dimensions Virtual Reality

VR is huge right now, but the upfront expense of buying the gear makes this hobby cost-prohibitive to some. Dimensions Virtual Reality is a great way to try out the tech and several cool games without the investment.

Other Family Day Ideas:

Swimming - Toonie Swim! The Cheam Leisure Centre and the Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre are hosting Family Day swims on February 20 from 9am - 3pm. Admission is $2 per person.

Skating - Free skate at Sardis Sports Complex on February 20 from 1:30 - 3pm! Skate rentals are $5 and you can receive free kids rentals with the purchase of two adult rentals. Visit chilliwack.com/skate for more info.

Escape Room Chilliwack by Exit Canada

Escape Room Chilliwack by Exit Canada

What better way to enjoy Family Day this February 20th then locking yourself in a room for 60 minutes with your loved ones!!!

We recently tried out Exit Chilliwack Escape Room and had such a great time together. We did the Triwizard Championship room and loved it so much.

The kids had their first time in an escape room and it challenged them at the beginning but they quickly got into the groove with finding and figuring out clues.

Highly recommend you check it out and enjoy your time!

Valentine's Day Date Ideas in Chilliwack

We are coming down to the final few days before Valentine’s Day, which means that if you haven’t booked a dinner reso yet, you may be out of luck.

But don’t despair… We have a few fun ideas for how you can spend your Valentine’s Day a bit differently this year - ideas that you can make fit any budget.

  1. A river date - Pack a picnic basket, a thermos of coffee (or swing by a local coffee shop to grab a hot drink to go), a warm blanket or two, and walk down to a spot along the river. There are plenty of entry points along the Vedder Rotary Trail that offer foot access to the beach. Talk about romantic on a budget! Tip: There are also great spots on the North Side of Chilliwack to picnic along the Fraser River - Island 22 Regional Park is a favourite of ours!

  2. Central Village - Central Village in Chilliwack encompasses the many vibrant shops, cafes, and service businesses along Historic Wellington Avenue and Mill Street. We recently posted a Reel on Instagram with a great date idea, taking you from a delicious brunch at the Harvest Cafe, over to the Book Man, and then across to Mary’s on Wellington for a little lingerie shopping, and Lolly’s Fashion Boutique to finish off the day. There are a number of other places that are worth checking out on Mill & Wellington - thrift shops, record stores, salons, and more.

  3. Banter Ice Cream - Located in the new “Eddy at the River” complex down by the Vedder Bridge, Banter offers amazing house-made ice cream, with new feature flavours every month. Stop in for a couple of cones, or grab a pint to go, and spent the night on the couch for a little “Netflix and chill.”
